The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) approved Belize Telecommunications Ltd. (BTL) plan to install a new wireless communications network that will extend BTL’s coverage to all of Belize, including un-served rural areas and other under-served areas.
BTL will still maintain and expand its existing GSM network, but the new wireless network, using the 450 MHz frequency, will significantly expand coverage. The cost of the network is around US$ 15.0 million. The expanded service availability primarily targets residents and businesses in small rural communities, as well as government agencies and people such as tour guides traveling into remote areas. The new network will help BTL fulfill its commitment to provide internet service to all government primary and secondary schools. The network is scheduled to go live before the end of 2007. BTL had approximately 104,000 subscribers by the end of the third quarter of 2006, giving them a market share of about 72%. BTL’s sole competitor is CDMA operator, Speednet Communications.
