Tuesday, 17 October 2006
RIAThe 2006 RIA! Annual meeting that took place in Dakar, Senegal from 26 May to 2 June 2006 was deemed a great success by the participants. The RIA! membership grew, with new members joining from Burkina Faso and Ivory Coarst. The RIA!-NetTel@Africa discussions were also fruitful as both parties realised the importance of sharing information as a way of keeping the partnership strong. The main topics for the meeting were the use of ICTs by small and medium enterprises in Africa and the regionalisation of regulation.

"The regionalisation of regulation is a subject of particular interest to Africa, because as in the international community, it is necessary for Africa to plan for the harmonisation of its legislative and regulatory frameworks in the domain of telecommunications and ICT" said Dame Gaye of Senegal's Ministry of Post, Telecommunications and New Information and Communication Technologies.

Also on the agenda was the issue of how research can influence public policy. According to Alioune Camara, director of IDRC's West African office, researchers must know and understand the level of influence they want to have in order to stimulate an awareness of the need to improve public policy in the area of ICTs.

Senegal's Le Soleil published an article in French about the meeting...
