Communitarian – IT schools in Mendoza, Argentina Print E-mail

The Foundation Favim (Foundation for the families of defenseless victims of Mendoza)has created ten new Communitarian – IT schools in the province of Mendoza (Argentina), that will be coordinated by ten civil associations which work in poor neighborhoods.

The aim is to encourage civic participation and local development through technology. One hundred young persons from urban and rural communities will be qualified to work as coordinators, technicians and teachers of the neighbors. After six months, these team of youths will head social projects that will contribute to surpass typical troubles of those communities.

University, government, civil society and private enterprise are together in the creation of these schools, an innovative initiative of teaching digital literacy that promotes civic participation and neighborhood security.

The initiative is part of the IT Communitarian Network , that began in 2003, and which is supported also by the Undersecretary of Relations with the Community and the Committee of Public Information of the province, the Universidad Nacional de Cuyoand the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional, region Cuyo

The mission of this Program is to contribute to local development, equaling access opportunities to new technologies, which are to be used as tools to promote participation, citizenship and the permanent education.

Most of the IT equipment comes from the Campaign “IT Solidarity” headed by company Compudat, and also supported by the institutions of IT Communitarian Network

On the other hand, the new computers for communities have been acquired thanks to the support of the World Bank, the Foundation YPF and the Minister of Education, Science and Technology
