A representative from the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) said that MII would provide guidance to enterprises in developing US$ 30 mobile phones and US$ 100 computers in order to boost demand for ICTs in rural areas and promote the development of the ICT industry.
The utilisation rate of China’s telecom network resources is not high in the country’s rural area, the representative said, saying that the utilisation rate of the long-distance network is 20%. MII encourages scientific research institutions and equipment manufacturers to develop telecom systems and products suited to rural conditions and to expand the rural market in an attempt to satisfy farmers’ demand for telecom products and services. In addition, MII intends to accelerate the establishment of telecom and postal funds and an electronics development fund to enhance rural development.
