Telmex Peru SA expects to start operating a new fixed wireless network in Lima and Callao by October after winning a 20-year license last week to provide fixed wireless telephone and broadband internet access for US$ 4.95 million.
Under the terms of the license, Telmex must install 7,000 lines in 16 districts in Lima and Callao that currently have the lowest teledensity. It can also install lines in other districts. According to the latest figures from Peru's telecommunications regulator Osiptel, fixed-line teledensity is 8.27 per 100 residents. The fixed-line market is currently dominated by Telefonica del Peru. Telmex Peru will expand to other parts of Peru, the company's president, Jose Gandulia, said. It is obligated to provide service in at least one location outside of Lima and Callao. Telmex is controlled by Mexico's Carlos Slim, who also owns Telefonos de Mexico SA. Telmex entered the Peruvian market when it acquired the assets of AT&T Latin America Corp. Source: Dow Jones - WDR/Intelecon Regulatory News |
