As part of the preparations for for the next WDR research and dialogue phase, LIRNEasia and the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), with the assistance of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada, co-sponsored a Workshop on ICT Indicators for Benchmarking Performance in Network and Services Development in New Delhi from March 1-3, 2006.

LIRNEasiaThe workshop was organised to highlight the need for accurate, standardized and comparable indicators for the region and to initiate action to develop good indicators. 

The three day workshop brought together 67 participants from 16 countries, including representatives from National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs), National Statistical Organizations (NSOs) and network operators from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, Afghanistan as well as the foremost authorities on the subject from the ITU, the OECD, the National Regulatory Research Institute in the United States and researchers from the Asian region.

The workshop was intended to elicit participants' cooperation in establishing a sustainable system for measuring and benchmarking ICT sector input and output indicators for South Asia that can be extended to developing Asia.
