Cheap mobile phones in Brazil Print E-mail
Thursday, 15 December 2005
Brazilian mobile operator Claro has announced plans to sell mobile handsets for just BRL 1 (US$ 0.44) in Minas Gerais, according to a report in local paper Gazeta Mercantil. Claro, which will offer phones by Motorola, Nokia and Siemens, hopes that the promotion will help it to boost its market share in the state. The cellco entered Minas Gerais in October 2005, competing with Telemig, Oi and TIM, but its entry into the market was interrupted after just 21 days because of a cross-shareholding arrangement between it and Telemig which was deemed illegal. It received approval to re-enter Minas Gerais on 9 December 2005.
