Online Dialogue

The WDR Online Dialogue on New Players in Network Development began June 20 and will continue for six weeks. A summary of the first week is now available on line.

During the first week, the online Dialogue has been addressing the current WDR overarching research theme, diversifying participation in network development. This theme was selected by the WDR research community because of a growing recognition that full development of networks and services requires a much wider diversity of participation from both the public and private sectors. Yet, despite this growing awareness, especially evidenced in communities that are already building their networks from the ground up, there is no clear model for how to extend participation.

What are the catalysts for good models of extending networks to those who do not have access? What elements ensure robustness and sustainability of the networks once new players start to build them?

LAC Workshop on ICTs Regulation and Equity
Rio de Janeiro, 6-8 June 2005

Major steps were taken toward the consolidation of a regional research network focusing on pro-poor telecommunication strategies for Latin American & the Caribbean (LAC) during a meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 6-8 June 2005. Known by its Spanish acronym, DIRSI, the Regional Dialogue on the Information Society (Diálogo regional sobre la sociedad de la información) brings together researchers from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago and Uruguay. LIRNE and the World Dialogue on Regulation are founding members of the network.

The network has embarked on an ambitious pro-poor research agenda with an equally ambitious timeframe, planning to publish its first results in time for November’s WSIS summit in Tunisia.
