Morocco’s telecommunications regulator ANRT granted a one-month extension on offers for new fixed-line licenses at the request of bidders.
Firms will be allowed to submit bids until June 20, instead of May 24. There are six local loop licenses, two long-distance licenses and two international licenses available. The new licenses will end the monopoly of Maroc Telecom, controlled by Vivendi Universal. Since the launch of the tender in February, 31 firms have expressed interest. Fixed-line phone services in Morocco offer high growth potential due to a penetration rate of less than 5.0%. The government hopes that fixed-line liberalisation will set off the same type of rapid growth as they saw in the mobile market after the 1999 sale of a license to Meditelecom, a consortium led by Telefonica. Meditelecom also plans to bid for the fixed-line licenses. Source: Reuters |
