Afghanistan's mobile phone market will see the entry of two new GSM operators starting next year.
Bidding for the new licenses will commence on 15 May and end 16 July 2005. Afghanistan's Ministry of Communication said that fees from the new licenses would raise more than US$ 200 million in new foreign direct investment, and at the same time create thousands of skilled, well-paying jobs. The two major mobile operators in Afghanistan today are Roshan – owned by the Aga Khan Development Network – and Afghan Wireless Communication Co – a joint venture between the government and Telephone Systems International Inc. Service by the new mobile licensees is expected to begin on 10 January 2006. Source: Telecomworldwire |
