Jordan: TRC sets new rules for telecommunications providers Print E-mail
Thursday, 28 April 2005
All operators in Jordan are now allowed to provide fixed-line voice services, including international services.

The announcement was made by TRC (the regulator) and is a result of the TRC's fixed services liberalisation initiative. The TRC's new regulations and licensing regime will allow 26 existing telecommunications licensees to provide a broad range of telecommunications services, including domestic and international fixed voice services using any technology that they consider appropriate, subject to certain technical limitations.

The actions were taken to achieve the goals and objectives set out in the 'Statement of Government Policy on the Information and Communications Technology Sectors and Postal Sector' that was published in September, 2003. TRC CEO Muna Nijem stated, “This action coupled with the licensing of wholly new entrants to the sector, means that consumers and businesses will have a wider choice of providers and services and can expect lower prices.

The opening of the market is being undertaken in the context of a new licensing framework that is consistent with the highest international standards of fairness and transparency.” The monopoly of Jordan Telecom over the supply of certain services ended on December 31, 2004.
