Moldova: Moldtelecom Seeking Mobile License Print E-mail
Friday, 01 April 2005
Moldova's monopoly fixed-line operator Moldtelecom will take part in the planned tender for a third mobile license.

Moldova plans to launch the tender to stimulate the competition in its mobile market. The license fee was set at US$ 8.0 million. The new mobile operator will use CDMA technology. Moldova started to implement CDMA last year.

"We will participate in the tender," said Iurii Ungureanu, an adviser to Moldtelecom.

"We already have a CDMA license in fixed line telephony and it will be reasonable to use it for mobile services, too," he added.

Moldova’s mobile market started in 1997 with Voxtel, established by France Telecom. In 1999, Turkey's Turkcell was awarded the second mobile license and set up the second operator, Moldcell. Both operators use GSM technology.
