Peru: MTC will not allow current mobile operators to bid for fourth license Print E-mail
Tuesday, 15 March 2005
Peru's transport and communication ministry MTC will not allow mobile operators Telefónica Móviles, TIM Perú, BellSouth and trunking operator Nextel to participate in the auction for a fourth mobile license.

Peru's investment promotion agency ProInversión expects to auction the new license on April 1. MTC wants a new operator in the market since the acquisition of BellSouth Peru by Telefónica Móviles could lead to a dominant operator.

So far, only the local unit of Mexico’s Telmex has shown interest in participating in this auction as a way to expand its existing fixed line business.

In other telecommunications news, MTC made two changes to the telecommunications market liberalisation law so that interconnection charges are reviewed every four years. Industry regulator Osiptel will also be empowered to review interconnection charges any time it chooses to do so. By adjusting interconnection charges, MTC hopes to facilitate the further development of the telecommunications market.
