Brazil: Telemar to fulfill universal access objectives Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 February 2005
Brazilian fixed-line provider Telemar is signing contracts with telecommunications equipment suppliers in order to fulfill its universalisation targets established by Anatel, the telecommunications regulator.

The company has signed an agreement with Siemens to supply equipment to the North and East regions. Telemar intends to expand active public phones in areas with more than 100 inhabitants and to offer individual lines to communities with more than 200 inhabitants. Telemar’s obligations require it to install lines in more than 5,500 regions throughout 16 states in its coverage area. Telemar chair Ronaldo Iabrudi predicts the expansion commitments will account for R$ 400 million in investments out of total investments of R$ 2.5 billion in fixed, mobile and Internet services in 2005.

Since most of the regions to be supplied are difficult to access, Siemens developed a voice over IP solution operating via a Hispamar satellite. Hispamar is the joint venture between Telemar and Hispsat. Siemens' research and development centre invested US$ 30 million in 2004, half of which was directed to the development of this solution.
