Morocco: Meditel interested in Moroccan fixed line license Print E-mail
Tuesday, 08 February 2005
Telefonica Moviles’ Moroccan subsidiary Meditel is interested in the upcoming tender for a new fixed line telephony license in Morocco, Meditel managing director Miguel Menchen said.

Menchen said, 'We're waiting with interest for the conditions on the tender, in order to make an offer.'

Meditel plans to invest over 100 million euros in its Moroccan operations in 2005, excluding possible investments in fixed line operations, he said.

Moviles has a 32.18% stake in Meditel, whose management is shared with the company's other major shareholder Portugal Telecom. Meditel had 2.57 million subscribers as of the end of September 2004, up 38% from a year earlier.

In many countries, when mobile telephony licenses were originally being granted, the fixed incumbent was one of the license recipients. The latest news from Meditel highlights a new trend where successful mobile operators are applying for fixed telephony licenses, often with the intention of using fixed wireless technology to serve their fixed-line subscribers.
