Peru: Operators reduce fixed-to-mobile tariffs Print E-mail
Thursday, 03 February 2005

Peruvian mobile operators have reduced their fixed to mobile interconnection rates, leading to a 9.44% average reduction in the consumer price for such calls, according to Osiptel president Edwin San Román.

This was the second rate reduction in an adjustment process proposed by Osiptel in 2004 that is designed to bring down rates by 30% from their levels as of August 2004. The process started with a 3.4% average reduction in August. The final cut will take place in August of this year.

"Tariffs per second will be established near 0.016 soles (US$0.0049) next August after reaching 0.025 soles in July last year. With these tariffs we will reach international standards but that does not mean we will not continue monitoring the market," San Román said.

Telefónica Móviles will reduce its tariffs 10.81%, Comunicaciones Móviles (formerly BellSouth) by 10.79%, Nextel by 10.73% and TIM by 5.45%. TIM's reduction is lower than the others since their existing tariffs were lower than those of the competition, San Román said.

With the previous 3% reduction, Peruvian users did not increase their traffic in minutes, although Osiptel expects fixed line users to increase their calls since this is a larger reduction.
