Research ICT Africa! (RIA!), a collaborative network of 12 African research institutions coordinated by WDR's African partner, the LINK Centre has embarked on an ambitious project to understand demand and access strategies of consumers for fixed, mobile and Internet services in various developing country contexts. For this project RIA! is developing an E-usage Index that will cover Botswana, Cameroon, Ethiopia,Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique Nambia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
Pilots have already been conducted in nearly all countries with the final survey entailing around 30,000 household across the continent. All RIA research is public domain and the results of the study will be available on the RIA! website by November. RIA! seeks to fill a strategic gap in the development of sustainable information societies and network economies by builidng ICT policy and regulatory research capacity to inform effective governance of the sector. Its work is made possible by the support of the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC). Last year the network conducted a seven country review of the performance of the ICT sectors at the national level. The country studies and the abridged review can be found on www.researchICTafrica.net. |
