El Diálogo Regional sobre Sociedad de la Información (DIRSI – www.dirsi.net) presenta el reciente trabajo de la red de investigadores DIRSI, La Pobreza Digital: Perspectivas de América Latina y el Caribe, que ha desarrollado los siguientes temas: Medición de necesidades de información e indicadores TIC, protección del consumidor, actual contexto de concentración de mercado que ha mitigado los efectos de las reformas regulatorias, el rol de las nuevas tecnologías y los modelos de propiedad comunitaria que aumenten las oportunidades de provisión de servicios.
DIRSI es un socio del WDR en América Latina y el Caribe. |

infoDev renews WDR support |

WDR was initiated by infoDev with a 3 year grant, which terminated in June 2004. It has been one of infoDev's Flagship projects. With infoDev now under the leadership of Mostafa Terrab, the programme has been under review in light of a more focused vision on integrating and synthesizing practical information delivered in timely fashion to ICT policymakers, regulators and those involved with applications and implementation. |

DIRSI to meet in Buenos Aires |

The Regional Dialogue on the Information Society, known by its Spanish acronym DIRSI, will meet in Buenos Aires, Argentina on November 30 and December 1 & 2. On November 30 Argentinian regulators will join DIRSI members in a seminar on regulatory frameworks in the context of the next generation networks. On December 1 & 2 DIRSI members will review the research conducted in 2006, plan activities for 2007, and review the network's strategic planing.

LIRNE.NET/WDR Expert Meeting in Uruguay |

From March 7-9 LIRNE.NET and WDR held an expert meeting in Montevideo, Uruguay to discuss recently completed research with sector representatives, to share findings and methodologies across regions, and to prepare the next WDR/LIRNE research and dialogue cycle. The meeting brought together some fifty experts, including researchers from the LIRNE centres in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas, other researchers, and representatives from the regulatory community, the private sector and civil society from sixteen countries and all continents (participant list). From April 18-20 WDR's Latin America and Caribbean partner, the Regional Dialogue on the Information Society (known by its Spanish acronym DIRSI) organised a workshop on ICTs Regulation and Equity in Latin America and the Caribbean. The activity took place in the headquarters of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile and was sponsored by IDRC as part of its global initiative on pro-poor, pro-market ICT policy. |

VOIP and Regulation Workshop |

The Telecom Regulation Authority of India (TRAI) and infoDev held a one day workshop on Convergence, VOIP and Regulation in Delhi, 10 March. LIRNE.NET provided international experts William Melody, Ewan Sutherland, and Reza Tadayoni who joined TRAI officials with presentations and discussant comments before a lively group of 50 participants from TRAI, the Ministry and the sector. |

The final WDR Expert Forum under the 2003/04 theme, Stimulating Investment in Network Development, was held on September 17-18, at the Mount Lavinia Hotel, Mount Lavinia, Sri Lanka. It was followed by a strategic planning workshop for LIRNEasia on September 19 and combined with the launch of LIRNEasia, the Asian affiliate of LIRNE.NET. The events brought around 60 participants to one of Sri Lanka’s historic hotels from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Canada, Denmark, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Uruguay. |
