Multi-utility Cases: Vivendi, Eskom and Williams

Andrew Barendse

WDR Working Paper #0201

This paper provides a brief description of three multi-utility companies; Williams, Eskom and Vivendi that are successfully participating in the telecoms market. While both Williams and Eskom have migrated from traditional energy utility sectors, Vivendi migrated from the water sector. Unlike Williams’ and Vivendi’s business motives the Eskom migration is motivated primarily by political forces.  The South African government in particular is hoping to capitalize on the envisaged listing of Esi-Tel as well as on fulfilling its African renaissance ambitions. The focus on the case will be on their respective accomplishments in the telecom sector after only a relatively short period.

Keywords: Multi-utility, Vivendi, Eskom, Williams.
