IDRC Supports WDR and LIRNE.NET
expansion
The International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada, has become increasingly involved in supporting LIRNE.NET and WDR activities. Among their many activities supporting ICT development and applications in Africa in recent years have been projects at the
LINK Centre, Wits University, Johannesburg. Last year IDRC funding provided the opportunity for LINK to participate as a research partner in the WDR and join the
LIRNE.NET collaboration. IDRC also sponsored the highly successful WDR Expert Forum in Cairo, 2-4 May 2004. –link-
This year IDRC is playing a significant role in helping to establish LIRNEasia in Sri Lanka by sponsoring a WDR Expert Forum, planning workshop and Centre launch, 17-19 September 2004.
(See story) In addition, IDRC is engaging in discussions with other donors about additional support for essential research and training program support for our developing country centres and their regional networks.
IDRC will be participating in this year's WDR Dialogue Theme, Diversifying Participation in Network
Development, through its new initiative focusing on identifying and implementing
Pro Poor, Pro Market ICT opportunities in developing countries, which will be one of the major themes in this year’s WDR. IDRC Senior Economist Dr. Randy Spence is leading this initiative, rspence@idrc.ca.
