Uganda:
Operators raise funds for rural communications project 16
August 2004 – According to a report from the Xinhua
News Agency, MTN, UTL and CELTEL
have contributed 3.3 billion shillings (US$ 1.9 million) to the Uganda
Communications Commission's (UCC) Rural Communications Development Fund
(RCDF). UCC Executive Director Patrick Masambu
said nearly US$ 900,000 had been disbursed towards RCDF projects, while over US$
800,000 has been committed to starting up more RCDF-related projects. Masambu
said the goal of the RCDF is that by the end of 2005, every sub-county in Uganda
would have at least one public pay phone, while every district would have
Internet access. MTN, UTL and CELTEL are required by law to contribute one
percent of their annual gross income towards the RCDF. Masambu said the implementation of the
project is on course since its launch in February 2003. Of the 56 districts in
Uganda, 29 districts have ICT training centres, 26 have district information
portals, and 21 have Internet cafes. Intelecon
